In Class Inquiry about Status:  Pre-understanding 

 

1. What is social status?  

2. Why do human beings desire status? (What motivates status-seeking?) 

3. What do you see as the criteria for status? (i.e. On what basis does our society rank persons?)

4. What role do groups and group beliefs play in status? (i.e. How is status relative to group/class/subculture?)

5. What is social conformity

6. And what inner qualities, attitudes, or virtues are necessary to individuality?

7. What internal or external obstacles stand in the way of an independent individuality?

8. We often hear people chatter about their desire to "be someone." In your own opinion, how important is social status to your idea of "being someone?"
