Children's & Young Adult Literature Awards

Many of the Children's Book Awards have been added to our juvenile collection for check-out and may also be available from Marinet.

Newbury Award Winner

The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children (American Library Association).

Caldecott Award Winner

The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children (American Library Association).

Printz Award Winner

The Michael L. Printz Award annually honors the best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit, each year (Young Adult Library Services Association).

Batchelder Award Winner

"The Batchelder Award is given to the most outstanding children’s book originally published in a language other than English in a country other than the United States, and subsequently translated into English for publication in the United States." (ALSC)

Coretta Scott King Awards

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values (American Library Association).

Pura Belpre Author & Illustrator Awards

The Belpré Medal honors a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose works best portray, affirm, and celebrate the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth (American Library Association).

William C. Morris Award

The William C. Morris YA Debut Award, first awarded in 2009, honors a debut book published by a first-time author writing for teens and celebrating impressive new voices in young adult literature  (Young Adult Library Services Association).

Beatty Awards

"The California Library Association's John and Patricia Beatty Award honors the author of a distinguished book for children or young adults that best promotes an awareness of California and its people." California Library Association website

Geisel Award Winner

The Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year (American Library Service to Children).

Sibert Medal Winner

The Sibert Medal honors the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published during the preceding year (American Libar Association).
